Hazelwood West Middle Student Success
At Hazelwood West Middle School our primary goal of the Student Success Program at the beginning of each day is to develop a supportive relationship between each student and a faculty member, while providing at least one “go to person” for students throughout their school day. This relationship, while improving student attendance, attitude, and achievement, will also encourage healthy decision making and foster a deeper sense of community among the student body. The program is designed to meet the developmental needs of the students as they progress throughout their academic career, while supporting a positive self-esteem, self-control and organization. Everyday students will come to their student success class first thing in the morning from 8:10-8:30 am each day. Students will receive a score each trimester for their participation and effort, similar to their Academic Excellence score. Each day teachers will support this by ensuring students have their planners, ID’s and assignments/materials for the day. During Student Success, teachers will also have students log on to Student Portal to check their grades, discipline, and fines. Students will goal set each week and/or each trimester through this program and prepare their portfolios for conferences throughout the school year.
Student placement in Student Success will be gender specific. When teachers plan Positive Behavior lessons around building student self-esteem, positive relationships with their peers and adults and expectations throughout the school building and in their lives outside of school by being gender specific, conversations with students will be more specific to their needs. If a student is participating in our “Check in/Check out” program, students will be placed according to their need for this programming. Journal writing and/or discussion may take place with the topics presented.
